SFU Omics Reading Group

posted by Arya Faghihy on Oct. 15, 2023, 5:31 p.m.

Hello everyone,
I'm passing along a message from the SFU Omics group!

Hello everyone, we are planning to start a reading group based on data-analysis / visualisation / bioinformatics in R.  We have chosen R because of easily available and solid resources. The books have codebases, datasets which we can follow at our own pace and convenience. We are thinking of having bi-weekly hybrid meetings to discuss and interact.
We are thinking of going about it this way:

  • We select a book to read in the Slack Channel (access it here: https://join.slack.com/t/sfuomicsgroup/shared_invite/zt-24wnsju8i-CDiNQ2YmpMEbN3jobvT3Fw), and discuss how much we want to cover for the first meeting.
  • We read/ write code/ plot figures from the chapter in the first two weeks.
  • In the meeting, we can discuss about ideas/ problems faced/ talk about any installation issue and decide how much we want to cover for the next two.

We will start withA Little Book for Bioinformatics. The link is : https://a-little-book-of-r-for-bioinformatics.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

We will have the meetingswednesdays 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM and will go beyond if its required. Please let know if you have a clash with the timing. We will have it via zoom if we have a picket line at Burnaby Campus, otherwise we will have it hybrid.

The workflow can be this:
  • People go through the chapter and attempt the exercises before the meeting.
  • In the meeting, we can have a quick overview and then we can do a code-along. (We will project/sharea screen and we can work out the code together)
  • We can go through the 3rd chapter DNA Sequence Statistics (1) and at the end discuss how much we want to cover for the next meeting

Please also let know if you face any issues while installing R/ R-studio. (It will be great if we are done with installation issues before the meeting). You all can contact@Miguel, @Negin Ketabchi, @Tom Xie, @Debapriya Roy

🍂🍂 FALL HACKS 2023! 🍂🍂

posted by Justin Yan on Oct. 13, 2023, 1:40 a.m.

Hello everyone,

The CSSS is once again proud to announce the return of our annual Fall Hackathon! The fourth iteration of this annual event will be taking place on Saturday, October 21st! Whether you have never attended a Hackathon before, or are an advanced programmer, this event is welcome to programmers of all skills!

What's a Hackathon, and why should I attend?

A hackathon is an event where teams of people come together to work on a shared project inspired by a theme that is provided at the beginning of the event. Hackathons are a great opportunity to make a cool project and learn new tools and technologies. These projects are a good way to demonstrate collaboration and have concrete proof of your skills on your resume.

Please register on Eventbrite with the following link: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/fall-hacks-2023-tickets-735239048787?aff=oddtdtcreator

A schedule & full list of FAQs can be found on Eventbrite as well. If there are any other questions, please reach out to csss-exec-current@sfu.ca.

Here is a summarized breakdown of the event details:

Event: Fall Hacks 2023

Date: Saturday, October 21st, 2023

Check-in & Registration: 9:00 am, Saturday, October 21st

Opening Ceremony: 9:30 am, Saturday, October 21st

Check-in location: TASC 1 9204

Price: $5 for SFU students, $20 for non-SFU students

Food: Two meals (lunch and dinner) will be provided

*You may have noticed that there will be a $5 charge for SFU students for Fall Hacks 2023. This is to ensure that our signups are as accurate of a representation as possible of the number of actual attendees on the day of the event, and so we can get an accurate amount of catering to minimize food waste. However, you will be receiving more than your money's worth as you are provided two meals and an opportunity to gain valuable project experience and something to add to your resume! Please indicate any dietary restrictions when signing up.
