Nominee Speech:

Hello everyone, my name is Justin Yan, a 4th year Computing Science and Linguistics Joint Major and the current Vice President of the CSSS, and I am running to be your next CSSS President. For the majority of you, you might recognize me as the person who spoke at your Welcome Day and/or as one of your TechConnect mentors, both initiatives of which I have been a part of every year since 2020.

Over the last year, I have overcome challenges within my academic life including balancing a large upper division course load in both the summer and fall semesters and being on a co-op placement this semester, all while being an executive of multiple DSU's at the same time. Despite my large workload, I was able to make ends meet and fulfill my duties of being present to chair every general meeting and attend almost every Department and UPC Meeting as required of my position.

Before becoming Vice President, I was previously the Assistant Director of Events from 2021-2022 and Executive-At-Large in Spring 2020, and I was a recipient of the Computing Science Student Society Award in Summer 2022, an award that recognizes students in computing science who display exemplary volunteer work and community service. Additionally, I make the effort to take on extra work within the community, ranging from stepping up to become the Mountain Madness Hackathon Chair in 2022, sitting on SFU's very own IT Committee or being a part of the planning committee for the most recent FAS Formal this year.

Here are a list of campaign promises I plan to focus on during my time as President:

  • Alumni Relations - Many of our industry connections are formed through former members of the community, and having good relations with our alumni can translate to networking opportunities with their industries, so it is invaluable for our own peers ahead of us to help ease us into the industry. This includes inviting our soon to be alumni President back to host a second session of the popular Raspberry Pi Pico workshop in the summer as well as networking within lesser explored niche areas such as Computational Linguistics & NLP. Additionally, having a strong alumni presence in the realm of networking enables us to recognize them for their achievements and contributions they have made towards the CSSS as members of the community.
  • Communication and Reputation with the Department - As a FAS Student Ambassador, I have had the opportunity to work extensively with the department over the last 3 years ever since I started in the position in May 2020. Being in this position has provided familiarity with the faculty and staff through various student engagement initiatives, and lowers the barrier of communication of reaching out to the department. I will strive to maintain our reputation as a society within the Faculty which has been built up by many of those who came before me, as well as keep in contact with the department to represent the interests of the members of the CSSS.
  • Keeping up with CSSS Tradition - The CSSS has various signature events of which we are defined by. That being said, I will keep up our traditions by either taking charge of, or ensure that there are enough resources and humanpower to run all of the major events and initiatives of the CSSS, including but not limited to Frosh, Tech Fair, two annual Hackathons, FAS Formal and a Silicon Valley or equivalent networking trip.

Outside of the CSSS I've been the Director of Marketing & External Relations for the Cognitive Science Student Society for the last 7 semesters. I more recently started as a Communications Director for the Linguistics Student Union too, which enables me to carry the perspective of multiple different DSU's and how they operate, as well as being well-versed in a variety of different executive roles and duties. Additionally, I worked as a research assistant in the linguistics department in the Fall in which I assisted a professor in maintaining their codebase that was to be used for an experimental study.

I always strive to get more people through the door and become familiar with the CSSS, and it is my passion to ensure that everyone forms a tight community with each other. It also makes me happy that multiple of my mentees in TechConnect each year end up becoming either CSSS or SSSS execs (all of you know who you are!) Finally, I would like to thank every executive team that I have had the pleasure and opportunity to work with over the last 2+ years, and here's to hoping the next team will be just as great!

Thank you for listening to my speech, I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their semester!

Sincerely,

Justin Yan

Hi all.

You may know me from spamming your inbox with emojis and color filled emails of our educational events.

But a more formal introduction: My name is Valerie. I am a fourth year Computing Science (major) and Statistics (minor) student and was the Director of Educational Events (DoEE) for the CSSS this last year. Being DoEE was a fantastic experience. I got to meet so many incredible students, work alongside a fantastic executive team, and host some really rewarding events (karaoke, obviously 😜)

It was an epic term of events. Some events I hosted, led, or was apart of:

  • Workshops: Git Ready! Beginner Git (recurring), Beginner Linux (recurring), Beginner Rust, Beginner Docker
  • Events: Computing Science Career Diversity Conference, Faculty of Applied Science Students and Faculty Informal Discussion about academic resources, chatGPTTT: Faculty of Applied Science Students and Faculty Informal Discussion about chatGPT in the educational setting, Course Planning Informational, Early Career Panel, Grad School Info Session, Resume Review Workshop with Campus Program Coordinator from Visier, Computing Science Concentrations Office Hours Week!
  • Other: Karaoke Night, Super Karaoke, Valentines Day Community Board

I am a really big advocate for learning and education, and I had so much fun with the educational events role…but it’s time for something new…and that’s why I am running for Vice President!

Some plans for the role include:

  1. Student Feedback: One of my initiatives last term was to start collecting feedback from students (it’s the Stat minor in me…). We were able to gather a bunch of student event data and use the feedback to improve events, plan future events to hold… As VP, I’d like to continue pushing on that approach: try to give the students what the students want! To make sure our events, initiatives, support are helpful to YOU. Ultimately, the Computing Science Student society is here to represent the undergraduate student body. With a stable and consistent way to get this feedback, we can do that even better!

  2. Community: A strong connection between students and faculty is something I really cherish. I was lucky enough to be a part of multiple events planned by or hosted alongside faculty (Graduate School Info Session, Faculty of Applied Science The Teaching Talks, Computing Science Concentrations Advising Office Hours…a big thanks to all the faculty who made these events possible). A strong student union is one that is not disconnected from the fantastic faculty that mold us into the fantastic students that we are.

With this all in mind… I am away this Summer for an internship and Fall is my last term… But either way, I’d love if you gave me a chance to make it all work 😊

I would appreciate the opportunity to finish my degree helping the community I love so much.

Val :-)

Nominee Speech:

Hi Everyone,

My name is Johnson Luong, I'm a current 3rd year CS major here at SFU, and I am running for the position of Vice President here at the SFU Computing Science Student Society. I am the current Director of Communications which I've held for 2 years (transition document go brrr). Before this I was a First Year Representative here at the CSSS for the Fall 2020 - Summer 2021 term.

Some things I've done at the CSSS:

• As a previous First year Representative I worked with the other FYR to host two online boards games nights during covid for fellow first years. This entailed some logistical planning such as creating the graphics, writing promotional material, planning out the events and of course executing them.
• As the current Director of Communications I've maintained our social media over the years such as our Facebook (damn we have a Facebook!? yeah I know), Instagram, and our Linkedin, which is our newest addition that I've created and been posting to. This includes being in charge of marketing, posting, and acting as a liaison for the CSSS by responding to other clubs, student societies, and external companies that message us. In this role I also arbitrate design decisions & moderation over at our discord https://discord.gg/sfucsss and have revived out biweekly newsletters last year... which I haven't had time to write recently .
• I've also volunteered at Frosh this year and helped do some miscellaneous tasks in the past such as help run our merch booth and open the exam bank cabinet for students (when I'm actually on campus).

Some of the things I want to accomplish as Vice President of the Computing Science Student Society include:

• Chair the CSSS biweekly general meetings to the best of my ability, ensuring that meetings are run smoothly and aren't dragged on for longer than needed.

• Actually be at the CSSS common room more often (I've realized that I don't come too often despite being an exec for awhile haha) to hang out and help around with duties such as with the exam cabinet.

• Help execs transition into the role and also take-on the duties of execs (including the President) in the case that they are unable to.

• Remain on the CSSS discord moderation team to help out with design decisions and further develop the community there.

• And Work alongside the President and the rest of the executive team to represent and advocate on behalf of the CS student body at SFU.

But the most importantly is... why should you vote for me out of all people!?

• I'm trusted. I've been a CSSS exec ever since I stepped foot on this mountain and and been exposed to many general meetings. From this I've gained a strong understanding of the nature of the policies and motions that take place during these meetings.

• I have experience chairing meetings as the current Co-Director of External Relations (doing sponsorship & in-kind outreach for Stormhacks) over at SFU Surge where I plan out agendas for weekly meetings, chair them, and record meeting minutes for an ER team consisting of 4 people.

• If I can predict the future I might be the only person running (or 1 of 2) so uhh :' ) few options.

Thanks for reading through my speech and best of luck on the rest of the sem!

Best,

Johnson Luong

Hi! I'm Gabe, A 4th year Computing Science student, the current President of the Game Developers club, and the current CSSS Treasurer.

During the past 12 months being the CSSS Treasurer, I learned a lot about the CSSS's finances, as well as about our interactions with the SFSS, School of Computing Science, and the Faculty of Applied Science. For this reason, I am interested in continuing my position for another year. My spreadsheet skills have only improved, you best be weary.

What things do I plan on improving for the next year?

  • Automate more aspects of this & adjacent jobs
  • More fine grained tracking of revenue sources (pop machine revenue, silicon valley trip, etc.)
  • Put more flavours of Linux on the common-room computer (already completed, but you can never have too many)
  • Reimburse people faster

Hello folks,

My name is Joyce and I will be entering my 3rd year of Computing Science at SFU this upcoming fall.

I am honoured to be running for the position of Treasurer in this year's election. As many of you may know, I joined the CSSS executive team last summer and served as your Exec at Large for two consecutive terms. During this time, I committed to making our student society more accessible and welcoming to all members. As such, I believe I can offer valuable experience and familiarity regarding the operations of the CSSS, as well as our student population.

As the Treasurer, my primary responsibility will be to manage the society's budget. I will work closely with the other executives to ensure that we allocate our resources in a way that benefits all members and initiatives of the CSSS. This will involve creating a budget, monitoring expenses, and reporting on the financial status of our society. Additionally, I will actively seek out new funding opportunities and sponsorships to help us reach our objectives.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am excited about the possibility of serving as your Treasurer, and I promise to work diligently to serve our student society and its members in this capacity.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you all!

Micah Baker for DoEE

"What makes not a man worse than he was, makes not his life worse; nor hurts either without or within." Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book IV, 8

Please, I hope you have not read that quote over several times. I cannot explain to you what it means because, frankly, I do not know. What I do know is that I am passionate about Computing Science!

My name is Micah Baker, and my highest goal is to learn and grow with my peers. I believe that through the Director of Educational Events (DoEE) role I can achieve this goal: to nourish our community through fascillitating educational events.

The first responsibility of the DoEE is to continue the academic events previously run through the CSSS. The Git, Linux, and various tooling workshops have met great interest from the Computing Science student body. So, it is the DoEE's responsibility to seek speakers and organize:

  • Beginner Git and Linux workshops,
  • Industry tooling workshops, and
  • Various programming workshops.

I plan—if time permits—to organize the following new (or reincarnated) workshops:

  • Installing Linux workshops (please check out the new tri-booted common-room computer!),
  • Quantum Computing workshops, and
  • Project Sharing get-togethers (possibly in collaboration with the newly created Developers n' Systems club).

Previously, I have served the Computing Science Student Society as the First Year Representative (2022-2023), where I organized several events, such as:

  • the Exeirus Alternative Reality Game (where participants solved cryptographic puzzles to win prizes),
  • the Science x Applied Science First-Years' Movie Night (in collaboration with the Science Undergraduate Society), and
  • Board Game Nights (+ Karaoke Nights).

I am incredibly lucky to receive Quantum Computing lessons taught by the distinguished Masters' student Shariq Ahsan with future Quantum Computing Club president Akki Singh, all in preparation to for Quantum Computing workshops.

Additionally, I am frequently involved with several external gatherings and organizations, such as TechConnect, The Teaching Talks (TTT), and other student unions, like the Science Undergraduate Society (SUS).

With this all said, I do hope that you find me suitable for this role.

TLDR; As the Director of Educational Events, I plan to continue with and build off of the present responsibilities that the role requires. I will listen and adhere to students' views and aspirations to learn topics that are applicable to the current Computing Science industry.

Thank you,

Micah Baker

Arya Faghihy for ADoE

“Legends speak of a dude who spawned on the Burnaby campus last Fall…
He showed up at the common room one day, and decided that he wanted to stay.
You might have seen him in RCB, battling a MACM 101 assignment. Maybe in CSIL, submitting yet another CMPT 125 project after hours of clawing away at the terminal. You would have definitely seen him in Board Games’ Nights, challenging the CSSS’s most fierce champions to a game of Exploding Kittens or singing ‘Hey Jude’ (Naaaaaa na na na na na na, na na na na, Heyyyyy Jude)...” (CSSS Book of Legends; Book 23, Chapter 4)

Yes :-) that’s me.

Hi there!

I’m Arya, a CS student running to be your Assistant Director of Events!

I previously ran for the first-year rep position in the now *famous* September 26 election, and although I didn’t win, I have contributed to the CSSS in the following ways:

  • As a member of the Events Committee, I’ve attended every meeting and done the following:
    • I created a template for a CSSS events calendar, where members can quickly look at which events are coming up so that they can plan ahead.
    • I was one of the people behind the CSSS Gingerbread Decorating event in December. I made the sign-up form for the event, purchased the gingerbread and helped organize the venue.
    • I helped supervise the room for the Exeirus Alternative Reality Game! I totally didn’t spend an hour coming up with my hacker name: 4R74
    • I have also been one of the people in charge of running Board Games’ Nights for the Spring semester! I help carry the board games to & from TASC and supervise the room of the event. I’ve also helped organize the Karaoke nights (and took the stage several times)!
  • I’ve attended almost every general meeting, where I’ve learned much about how the CSSS operates.
  • I’m also one of the co-founders and current president of the Developers & Systems Club (DNS)! As president I’ve organized a programming Icebreaker event and chaired regular executive meetings, where I’ve made sure that our events run smoothly by deciding on action plans & appropriately delegating responsibility.

So I already have a great deal of experience with this position as running Board Games’ Nights, attending Events Committee meetings and running regular events are all key responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Events. In the Events Committee I’ve gained experience with teamwork, event planning & preparation, room booking, and organizing events that encourage member engagement. My work with DNS has provided me with extensive leadership experience, as well as experience with administrative work and getting the required funding for an event. These invaluable experiences make me the ideal candidate for this position since I not only have the know-how to plan fun events, but also a consistent history of executing them.

As your Assistant Director of Events, I will:

  • Organize Game Tournaments and LAN parties (maybe even overnight…), or Boardgame Tournaments (Exploding Kittens’ championship, woo-hoo!) where the last person/team standing is awarded a huge prize!
  • Organize ice-cream / bubble-tea socials, where you can take your mind off coursework and have fun chatting with fellow participants!
  • Organize more off-campus events such as hikes & bowling nights so that we get to explore more of Beautiful British Columbia.
  • Work with the Director of Events to run events such as Movie Nights & info sessions with other Faculties & DSUs so that we can spend some time with people from other programs!
  • Work with the Director of Educational Events to run contests and workshops where you can hone your programming skills with your friends!
  • And of course, how can I not mention Board Games’ Nights (BGNs)? This semester’s BGN x Karaoke nights have had great turnout (and to be frank I’ve had way too much fun in them) so I intend to run those frequently. I also plan on spicing up the Board Games’ experience by adding more physically-intensive games, such as Twister and Throw Throw Burrito (maybe even add a dodgeball section). I also hope to further improve the BGN experience by asking you about what you think we should improve, whether it be in the choice of board games, food options or others.
  • I will also take surveys to see what events you would like us to run, and (with feasibility and vote of majority in consideration) see them through. I’ll also be open to general feedback. If you think there’s something specific that we should be working on please let me know! I’d be more than happy to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for taking your time to read my speech! I am very excited to work with the upcoming executive team to further improve the CS student experience at SFU. And I am looking forward to seeing you! Whether it be in the next Board Games’ Night, in a DNS event, in the Common Room or in a lecture hall!

Best of luck with your final exams & projects!

Hi everyone! My name is Isabelle Kwan and I am currently a first-year computing science student at SFU. Some of my contributions have included hosting study rooms, assisting at events, and planning first-year activities.

I think I am the perfect candidate to become CSSS’s next Director of Communications as I have a crippling addiction to Instagram and know that I can put this personality trait to good use. Furthermore, I have big ambitions for the future.

If I become voted as the DoC, I will create a CSSS TikTok (and if that doesn’t go through I will settle with Instagram Reels). You’ll see great things such as, “BGN recaps”, “A day in the life of a CS student”, “New Common Room Tour (CSSS Cribs)”, “This week at SFU (weekly updates)”, and many more.

You definitely won’t regret it!

Hey everyone!

I'm Darrick, a 2nd year CS student here at SFU, and I am running for Director of Communications!

If you have never heard of me before, first of all, how dare you? Kidding. That is probably because I have been too good for the average human ear to comprehend, so let me tell you about myself. Previously, I have had many relevant experiences related to the Faculty of CS and the CSSS. Some notable ones that you may or may not care about include:

  • Being a HIVE leader in Fall 2022, where I communicated with the first years and informed them of the CSSS and FROSH's existence (shoutout to HIVE 2, clearly the best one)
  • Became a FROSH committee member and a leader, where I communicated with even more first years, giving them a wonderful introduction to the CSSS (you're welcome)
  • Planned events as a member of the Events committee under the current DOE, most notably the CSSS x MechKeys typing competition event, where I not only planned and hosted the event, but served as the bridge of communication between the two clubs. (probably the best CSSS event)
  • Being titled a certified a**hole by none other than my good pal, the elections officer himself. (such an honor) (he is joking, he actually loves me)

As you can see, I am pretty great! But why should you vote for me? Well, other than the fact that I literally just listed down a bunch of reasons on why I am awesome, here is what I have in store if I do become your next DOC:

  • send you all informative, but fun CSSS emails. (promise no spam)
  • be generally more active in the CSSS social media accounts, most notably instagram
  • be the communicator between the CSSS and other clubs and organizations for collaborations in events (such as the keyboard one, you're welcome again)
  • reform the rules and management of the CSSS discord server so it's not going to be a constant dumpster fire (maybe only sometimes a dumpster fire)
  • potentially make new CSSS social media accounts (CSSS TikTok anyone?)
  • anything else the other execs want me to do (within reason, maybe sometimes outside of reason too)

So vote for me, I will be an amazing DOC on god fr fr.

Hello there, my name is Yolanda, and I am running to become your future Director of Multi-media!

Introduction

I am a third-year student in Linguistics and in the CTESL certificate program. (I have also taken one CMPT course to go through the experience of being a cool CS student.) As of now, I am an honourary member of the CSSS, and within the CSSS, had experience being an Exec-At-Large for one semester in the past. I am currently the Vice President and Communications Director of the Linguistics Student Union and the current Director of Multi-media for the CSSS since 2022 when the role was first created. I enjoy being involved in student groups, and during my free time, I like listening to music and play games :)

Why you should vote for me!

Suppose you are impressed by my creations that are often displayed on the CSSS's Instagram and occasionally on the CSSS Discord server. In that case, I believe that, with your vote, you can continue to look at satisfying and aesthetic graphics under the CSSS, whether it's seasonal themes for BGN and general meetings or even events that celebrate popular holidays and collaborations with other student-led organizations! I will continue to improve my skills in designing posters and promotional material to enhance the exposure and attraction of CSSS events and workshops.

Thank you to everyone in advance and good luck to the other candidates :3

Hello everyone! My name is Dina Zeng, and I am a 3rd-year Software System Student. Previously, I was your DOA (2021-2022) & E@L (Spring 2022), WiCS Co-President (2021-2022), and Software Systems External Representative (2021-2022) & First-year representative (2020-2021). While I was your DOA, I introduced the current meeting minutes templates and throughout my terms as an executive, I organized and facilitated multiple events such as Snow Day on Burnaby Mountain (2020) and Trivia Night(s) (2021/2022). If voted DOA, I will walk around in Minecraft crocs and I will ensure our minutes are easy, breezy, beautiful, Covergirl!! Jokes aside, here are my promises for the term:

  • I will buy a coffee machine for the common room (with CSSS money of course)
  • I will advocate for CSSS plushies (the frog).
  • I will create and/or maintain an open communication network between the SSSS, WiCS, and CSSS.
  • I will create another minutes template; one that is unique to the CSSS and is readable, organized, and better than ever.

Please say hi to me when you see me in the common room, I love meeting new people :)

Thank you for your time. Stay Slay Everyone <3

Hello there everyone,

My name is Elvin Zukic and I have had a great time being a first year Computer Science student at SFU over the past 2 semesters, and I am here today running to be your next Director of Archives (DoA).

I know this role is a good fit since I believe that organization is key to running any successful organization. I intend to make sure that everything said at our multiple multi-hour general meetings is well documented and public to everyone in the CSSS, so that we can maintain transparency and trust with the student base. As well as documenting the meetings, it will also be my job to inform the general CSSS of these meetings. I am planning to do that on two fronts, through Discord and Email, so no one will miss the chance to have their voice heard.

This would be a good role for me because I also have experience with the responsibilities and tasks a DoA must perform. I am currently VP of SFU Magic the Gathering Club and there I am responsible for chairing as well as doing the minutes of executive meetings. Although chairing meetings is the Vice President’s job here, I believe that my experience taking and archiving minutes there will assist me in being the best DoA I can be here.

If I am elected to be your DoA I would like to look into the data and bring out some statistics. Have you ever wondered who has done the most motions? How about who has seconded the most? Or even who has a perfect general meeting attendance record? This data is all recorded but no one has compiled it into one definitive record list. I want to do that and soon we will see all the records emerge and earn bragging rights if you hold one.

I do, however, have a personal reason for running for DoA. Ever since I’ve come to SFU the students of the CSSS and their common room have been the most friendly and welcoming people I have ever met and I want to give back in any way I can. If that giving back is organizing and keeping information secure, even better.

Thank you for your consideration,

Elvin Zukic
