šŸ’– Hey Besties! šŸ’–

Itā€™s election time again! My name is Isabelle and you might know me as the current CSSS Director of Communications (Social media extraordinaire :p) , RetroFrosh CO-Chair, previous CSSS First-Year Representative, and overall SFU enthusiast.

I am running to be your āœØ CSSS President āœØ for the 2024-2025 school year and need your help to make this happen! During my time in the CSSS, I have increased our community engagement by introducing instagram reels, advocating for cool events happening in our community, and increasing our social media account followings by hundreds of students! I have also had the opportunity to introduce some events to our community like Study Rooms āœšŸ», the Valentine's Day Candy/Roses Sale šŸŒ¹, and LinkedIn headshots šŸ“·. On top of this, I have also been an active and polite member of the Silicon Valley Committee, CSSS Events Committee, CSSS Policy Committee, WiCS, and volunteered for events like Tech Fair, FAS Formal, Mountain Madness, and many more. Through these opportunities, I have had the chance to meet many of you and support many great causes around our school!

As president, I would love to represent each and everyone of you, the student body of the School of Computing Science! (Including all majors, minors, and class-takers :D). I want to use this position to encourage those who are currently involved, and those who want to get involved, to have their voices heard and visions seen. As well, I would love to revive the CSSS merchandise committee and create new things for our community. TLDR: I want to create opportunities for you to have an impact on our school! :D

Overall, the CSSS is a place for everyone and I hope I can facilitate a space for us to continue to grow as a safe and fun community.

Live, Laugh, Love,
Isabelle Kwan

Nominee Speech:

Hi Everyone!

My name is Patrick Peake and I am running to be the next president of the CSSS. I have previously served as the Director of Events for the CSSS for the 2023-2024 term and am currently serving on the School of Computing Science Directorial Search Committee. I have previously organized Mountain Madness 2023 and 2024, Tech Fair 2023, The First Annual CSSS Summer Game Jam, and countless other events. I am currently working on organizing the Second Annual CSSS Summer Game Jam and Tech Fair 2024.

  • If I am elected I will Ensure that the CSSS Executive has the resources and support necessary to succeed and thrive by promoting a collaborative and positive environment where all opinions and suggestions are considered. I want to be able to find the best possible solution for all problems and issues by incorporating everyone's unique ideas and points of view into the decision-making process.

As some of you may know the coming year will bring with it budget cuts across the board including at the university level and from our other usual funding sources.

  • I plan to mitigate the consequences of this change by working with external sponsors to Expand CSSS funding sources so that we can continue to provide high-quality resources and events for students.

Thirdly, I want to ensure that the interests and needs of the undergraduate student body are considered by the School of CS, particularly when it comes to course offerings, selection, and enrolment.

  • To further this goal, if elected I will hold a town hall where students can express their concerns on course enrolment and other issues. We will take this feedback and present it to the university for consideration.

It has been incredibly rewarding being able to give back to the computing science community over the past year and I would love to be able to continue to give back through the role of President in the coming year.

Thank you and good luck with your finals,

Patrick Peake

Hello everyone,

You might know me as the guy who makes music (is it really music or is it just hip-hop beats?), and sends the ā€œGood Morningā€ gifs in the CSSS Discord server eĢ¶vĢ¶eĢ¶rĢ¶yĢ¶ most morning(s).

My name is Jake Choi, a Computing Science major with plans to pursue either a Statistics or Math minor. I (still) love being involved with the CSSS and being part of the community in any way I can.

Since being elected as the current interim Vice President of the CSSS, I remain actively engaged both within and beyond the CSSS, consistently dedicating my efforts to various initiatives and events. My involvement extends to serving as the 2024 FAS Formal Chair, a FAS Student Ambassador, a former Executive at Large for two semesters, a HIVE Welcome Leader, and being part of the CSSS Tech Fair committee, CSSS Frosh committee, CSSS Events committee, CSSS Policy Committee, and CSSS W3 committee. I have made many new friends and had the opportunity to work with such an amazing executive team, and was a part of many memorable events.

I thoroughly enjoyed my role as interim Vice President, but the duration felt incredibly short. Given my passion and dedication, I am eager to continue serving as the Vice president, which is why I am running for this position once more.

Some of my key commitments as Vice-President will include:

  • Continuing CSSS Traditions & Event Coordination - I will plan, organize, and run an interview workshop in Fall or Spring where students can practice interviews with recruiters. Additionally, I will maintain active collaboration with the next Director of Events and Director of Educational Events to supervise and contribute to the planning of CSSS's traditional events, including the upcoming Fall Hacks 2024, Mountain Madness 2025, Tech Fair 2025, FAS Formal 2025, and various workshops.

  • Connections with Faculty, Department Student Unions, & Clubs - As a FAS Student Ambassador, I've gained familiarity with the faculty and staff, and this ongoing experience will continue to make communication with the department more accessible and straightforward for effective interaction. Additionally, I've built connections with executives from different student unions and clubs through collaborative initiatives. Establishing strong connections with the faculty and staff is crucial, enabling me to effectively represent the needs and interests of the CSSS. Similarly, connections with other department student unions and clubs will facilitate collaborative event planning and initiatives with their executives, ensuring a more impactful student experience.

  • Student Feedback and Suggestions - I will continue to actively collect and listen to your feedback and suggestions to better understand your needs and preferences. This ongoing effort will guide us in making our events and workshops more useful and relevant to you, especially in the constantly evolving field of Computing Science and technology.

Thank you for taking the time to read my speech and consider my candidacy for the Vice-President position. I am excited about the opportunity to potentially serve as your Vice-President once again, and I am committed to fulfilling the responsibilities of this role diligently for the continued improvement and benefit of our student society and its members.

Thank you,

Jake Choi

Hello everyone!

My name is Mabel, in 3rd year CS, and I am running to be your treasurer! I am the current SFSS council rep for the CSSS, and have previously served as Exec-at-Large, running around to help with events and keeping the common room a vibe-worthy space. Additionally, I am also the current WiCS treasurer and have been overseeing the budget and spending for this year.

Starting last May, I have learned a lot about working with the SFSS in terms of how they operate and how to handle grants through council. My experience treasuring for WiCS has taught me a lot about budgeting, how we work with Faculty of Applied Science and School of Computing Science, external sponsors, and how important it is for funding to make its way back to students through events, workshops, networking, and other opportunities.

For the upcoming term, I am hoping to maintain the finances for the CSSS and ensure that we have a strong and accountable grasp on our budget. I intent to work closely with the exec team and sit on relevant committees to ensure that we can sufficiently run bi-weekly board games nights, our large-scale events (frosh, hackathons, game jams, silicon valley trip, etc), make cool merch, and whatever else we can cook up! I love being around this community, and while I have mostly been on co-op this year, I will be around in the upcoming semesters and would love to be more involved in helping to run the CSSS smoothly.

Thank your for your time,
Mabel

If you've appreciated the last few semesters of me as an Exec at Large, then know I'll keep doing what I can to improve everything here.

Hey everyone! Iā€™m Emily, and Iā€™m running to be your CSSS Director of Events. I want the CSSS to be a place where you can have fun and connect with friends, but also a hub for career advice, networking with professionals, and a place where you are given the steps to build your profile. This means more large-scale hackathons with sponsor booths and workshops, office tours, and interview workshops. On top of being on that career grind, Iā€™d love to spearhead social events, like group hikes and continue hosting the iconic BGNs!

You are a CSSS member. This is my vision for you next year:

You want to apply for jobs, but you need more projects under your belt!:

  • Expand our current hackathons to include more workshops.
    • More sponsor booths (for free merch + connecting to recruiters)!

You just completed a project at a CSSS hackathon! Time to start applying for jobs:

  • I have already secured two office tours for the CSSS in the future, with Amazon Web Services and GeoComply.
    • Will occur in summer + fall semester.
    • Companies love doing these events as they get to connect with talented students, and we love it because it lets us stand out from other co-op applicants. Itā€™s a mutual benefit Iā€™d love to take advantage of!

Awesome! You connected with a recruiter at a CSSS office tour and they offered you an interview. How are you going to ace this?:

  • Iā€™m planning an interview workshop with Jake for next year.
    • I canā€™t wait for you all to be practicing with real recruiters, not just leeting it up with leetcode!

Congratulations, you got the job! You can finally relax and spend time with your CSSS peers:

  • After all this job prep you need some rest. (CSSS ski trip??)
    • I plan to ensure BGNs continue to be as fun and successful as they always are.
    • Everyone always complains about SFUā€™s aesthetic, but have you ever looked beyond the architecture? Weā€™re super lucky to be on Burnaby Mountain and Iā€™d love to hold a hike in the summer where we go to see the sunset and enjoy some snacks.

Hereā€™s my experience:

  • CSSS First Year Representative
    • I am currently planning for an EA office tour in April and have co-hosted social events like the CSSS x SUS Movie Night and weekly study rooms.

  • Mountain Madness 2024 Co-Chair
    • I mainly organized day-of events, like the popular karaoke, Jackbox sessions, and the tetris break. I hope to encourage more presentations and submissions for next year! I was also responsible for securing our free RedBulls (youā€™re welcome)!

  • Other CSSS Endeavours
    • Silicon Valley Planning - despite being in first year, Iā€™m on the organizing team for this yearā€™s SV Trip! I played a role in reaching out to companies, and I canā€™t wait to be more involved on next yearā€™s team.
    • I helped coordinate the sign ups for FAS Formal - you mightā€™ve messaged me on Discord for tickets!
    • I sold merch during some BGNs, which Iā€™d love to zero in on during future BGNs.

  • Outside of the CSSS
    • Iā€™m involved in the greater SFU community through SFU Toastmasters, WiCS, and SFU 350. You can also catch me playing badminton during drop ins, and exploring other sports!
    • In high school I hosted several hackathons as the executive director of XdHacks Mini. Additionally, I was the HR Head at Youth Helping Youth BC, where I planned team-building activities and led the reorganization of company documents.

Beyond these ideas, Iā€™m ecstatic to hear the ideas that students come up with in the event committee. Stay tuned for awesome events, and donā€™t worry - Iā€™ll make sure to campaign for these events regardless of my position in the CSSS. See you next year!

Hello! My name is Archita Srivastava. šŸŒŸ

I am a third-year Computing major and Statistics minor student at SFU. I am interested in AI and ML and aspire to pursue research in the future.

Previously, I have served as a Co-Technical Coordinator at the Women in Computing Science Club and have had the incredible opportunity to host, organize, and facilitate various technical events such as Try/catch, technical workshops on topics ranging from Machine Learning to Cybersecurity, and Hackthons such as Hack-the-Sem at SFU. The primary objective of such events has always been to foster a learning environment for Computing Science students at SFU.

Through this experience, I've also had the chance to meet and form connections with many incredible people, worked with an amazing executive team at WICS, but most importantly, have realized my passion for empowering students to learn and develop valuable skills and experience.

So, after completing a successful term at WICS, I hope to contribute to CSSS and work towards the following goals as a Director of Educational Events:

  1. Host/Organize technical workshops and study sessions tailored towards first and second-year students to help them through the early stages of their degree.

  2. Organize events that allow students to gain exposure to academia and the unlimited opportunities it has to offer.

  3. Organize events that involve collaborating with professors/PhD students from various universities/research institutes to help students gain exposure and learn about ongoing research in topics of their interests.

  4. Organize events that involve collaborating with industry professionals to host technical workshops on a wide range of topics in Computer Science.

I also hope to use student feedback forms and interest forms to understand what the students want so that we could tailor our events based on their interests and preferences. These are some of my initial suggestions, but I am always open to feedback.

Regardless, as a candidate for this position, my overall goal will be to ensure that CSSS, as a club, fosters growth and helps students achieve academic success. Thank you!

About Me

Hey there, Iā€™m Elvin Zukic and Iā€™m a second year Computer Science student. I like to hang around quite a lot so you might have seen me around in the common room or at one of the many amazing CSSS events such as Board Games Night or FROSH. The CSSS has been my second home for the last 2 years and I'm giving back by running to be your next Director of Educational Events.

What Iā€™ve Done

I have run a plethora of events in the past for multiple student groups, including the FAS Co-op Program, SFU Esports, Burnaby Mountain Toastmasters, Google Developers Student Club, SFU MTG and of course the CSSS.

My experience is not only vast but also relevant. During my time with the Google Developers Student Club I helped run multiple educational IOS workshops and for the FAS Co-op Program I personally hosted and ran a HTML workshop.

Here is a quick list of what Iā€™ve done:

  • Dec 2022 Gingerbread Cookie Event with CSSS
  • Aug 2023 Toastmasters End of Semester Social
  • Sept 2023 1st HTML Workshop with FAS Co-op Program
  • Sept 2023 Volunteered at CSSS FROSH
  • Sept 2023 Toastmasters Icebreaker
  • Oct 2023 SFU MTG Icebreaker
  • Nov 2023 IOS Workshop with GDSC
  • Nov 2023 Bandai Namco TCG Event with SFU Esports
  • Nov 2023 2nd HTML Workshop with FAS Co-op Program
  • Feb 2024 SFU MTG Tournament

Through running these events I have accumulated valuable experience that will enable me to be an exceptional Director of Educational Events.

My Plans

If elected I want to help close the gap between industry and academia. I want to bring in real developers that work in the tech industry to help teach students valuable knowledge. Currently I have connections with employees at Google, Intel, Activision Blizzard and Amazon who are all willing to give talks for me and if I am elected I will bring all of them to SFU to host workshops and lectures. I am also involved in the Vancouver.dev community here in Vancouver which is a community of developers in the tech industry as a student ambassador. If I become your DOEE I will work to get as many developers from this community as I can to come do workshops and lectures

Quality is not the only thing I will focus on, I plan to up the quantity of these workshops so that students will be able to be constantly learning throughout their degree. Currently the plan is to bring you guys a workshop or a lecture once every 2 weeks. This way we can cover a wide variety of topics as Computer Science is a very broad degree.

I also intend to bring back the CSSS mentorship program which used to be run by a previous director, Oliver Xie, and hasn't been run for a year. This program was an amazing resources for younger students, helping them acclimate to university life and help make plans for the future at SFU. Oliver ran this program amazingly and I plan to model mine after his.

If you want to meet industry professionals, build strong connections and learn valuable knowledge along the way, please consider me for your vote.

George for DoEE

Hi :)

My name is George, 5th year Computer Science student, and I am running for Director of Educational Events (DoEE). You may not recognize my name, but I hope you would recognize me if we run into each other in the hallway. I tend to make the mistake of talking to people, but never really telling them my name. Not a good strategy when it comes to elections šŸ¤£.

Anyway, I have been part of the CSSS Events Committee for a while. If you attend CSSS events, you probably ran into me. Recently I have been running my own new, never-before-seen CSSS workshops, in addition to helping run CSSS events:

  • Ran the new Linux as an Operating System
  • Ran the new CMPT 125 Midterm Review, part of Midterm Marvels
  • Also helped run Fall Hacks, Mountain Madness and Frosh Week
  • And helped with CS:GO (CSSS x SFU Esports) and Board Games Night
  • I am also a HIVE Leader and a CS Peer Tutor, where I developed my passion for teaching and educational workshops

What I Would Like to Do

As DoEE, I would like to:

  • Improve Mountain Madness hackathon to rival UBC nwHacks
  • Organize a Graduate and Undergrad Social (they work on cool research projects)
  • Experiment with relaxing Icebreakers for shy and quiet students, so everyone can feel part of the CSSS community
  • Collab with other Student Unions
  • Run various workshops (if time permits)

All the Work I Did is Because of Your Help - Thank You

In no particular order, I would like to thank Valerie, Patrick, Micah, Arya, Gabe, Justin, Isabelle, Jake, Mitchell, Aiya, Sean, Dina, Mabel, Yolanda, Joyce, Zach, Darrick, Emily, Chloe, Han, special shout out to all of the volunteers, and all those who attended the events, for making and continuing to make CSSS awesome.

A Message to You

Click here if you would like to read the "top secret" message for you:

If you are actually reading this speech, I would like to thank you. SFU has about 2200 undergraduate Computer Science students. Last year only 169 students voted in the CSSS Election (7.7% of CS students). I actually went and looked at my old emails from 2023-04-04.

It is up to you to decide the direction of the CSSS. Please vote for the best candidates for all the positions in the Election. I am only running for DoEE, but all other positions also need to be filled with great candidates. The way CSSS runs and how we perform significantly depends on who gets elected (the execs for 2023-2024 were awesome, by the way).

Furthermore, please come to our CSSS General Meetings. I know they are late in the day, but we would really appreciate if you join us. It is also a nice way to feel part of the community. We want to hear what you have to say. If you have any feedback or ideas, please let us know.

- George

Hi everyone

My name is Taranveer and I am a third-year computing science student with interests in Cyber Security, gaming, and ice cream. I am running to be your next Assistant Director of Events and host some amazing new events.

  • I have been a student fundraiser for SFU for the last 8 months. Yes, I am that guy who helps collect bursaries and scholarships for other students. This work has made me more connected to the student community and also the alumni. I will use this experience and alumni connections to host events which include a lot of fun and knowledge.

  • As a Guidance Advisor (GA) I have interacted with a lot of students which has helped me understand student problems first-hand. I have hosted a lot of fun events for the student community as part of my position. I feel this experience is very useful for this position as I know how stressful it can get at times and how a good event can help you take your mind off of the stressful stuff.

These are some of the ways I am connected and helping the SFU community. The positions I handle and the experiences I have are essential for the Assistant Director of Events. All this makes me an ideal candidate as I have practical experience with theoretical knowledge and as CS students we all know the importance of practical knowledge.

I want to continue the legacy of hosting more fun events by doing the following:

  • Almost all of us have felt lost in our first year or even in later years as well. wouldnā€™t it be great if you could talk to a senior who has already taken that course or done that coding assignment? Let's have a Meet & Mingle event over a movie night because thereā€™s always that one movie you havenā€™t watched yet. Of course, thereā€™s going to be popcorn and a lot more!

  • I will be continuing the legacy of our great legends by having those amazing board game nights BUT what about a leaderboard??? Let's have more board game tournaments to earn the title of ā€˜Board Game Guruā€™. I will also be using my connections to collaborate with other FAS societies so we can have more awesome events and people.

  • Having a stressful day of classes? The quiz you studied for didnā€™t go your way? Let's take your mind off by having a gaming session on campus. As your ADOE I want to host virtual fun events as well, which include a lot of LAN parties and let's revive that Clash of Clans/Clash Royale account we all have and make an official CSSS clan.

As your ADOE I will always value your feedback for any future event or tournament. I will have regular surveys to keep myself updated on what everyone wants. All these fun events and many more off-campus events can only be possible with the support of all of you amazing people.

Thank you for taking the time to read my speech. I am looking forward to working with the upcoming team and taking your experience with the CSSS to the next level.

Hello, my name is Eitan Barylko and I am a second year computing science student. I am running for the position of Assistant Director of Events (ADOE) in the 2024-2025 elections.

I deeply cherish the events that the CSSS holds. Through them, I was able to meet many of my friends. I would like to assist the Director of Events so that incoming students can have this experience as well.

As ADOE, I plan on holding workshops about testing and how to use GitHub to implement best practices and improve productivity. I want to make each workshop more accessible by recording them, allowing students to engage in the material present in the workshop if unable to attend.

I will also run the other fantastic events the CSSS hosts, such as Board Games Night and Movie Night. I will also be the first (and potentially the last) ADOE to have one Board Games Night occur from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am (you thought you had me beat with an 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Board Games Night, but I'll show you!).

In all seriousness, I would love to hear your feedback on the events. You can find me most times in the new common room, so swing on by if you want to discuss an event or have some feedback. Say the magic words ā€œmakefile, makefile, makefileā€ in the common room and I will appear.

Thank you for reading through my speech, and I hope you have a wonderful day. Best of luck with finals!

It's Tong Tong!

Hey everyone! šŸŒŸ I'm Xutong Shen, but you might know me by Chloe. As one of the two exec-at-larges of CSSS, I've been actively engaging with our amazing community at SFU. I am currently a first-year student enrolled in the SFU-ZJU Dual Degree for Computing Science and Finance, and I think I've found my second family right here in the CSSS.

I always jump at any opportunity to give back to our CSSS community. From decking out the FAS Formal with fun, under-the-sea decor, preparing and selling Valentine's roses and treats, ensuring Mountain Madness participants are signed in, and putting in a hand to sell CSSS hoodie merch - it's always been a pleasure of excitement and I've loved every minute! But why stop there? šŸš€ The thought of being your next Director of Communication is not just an honor, it's a opportunity to give back to this vibrant community that's already given me so much. And guess what? I'm brimming with ideas for 2025, including a FAS Formal video that's bound to impress with all our attractive FAS students, plus so much more waiting in the drafts, ready to show themselves off.

Here's my pledge to you as your potential CSSS DoC:

  • Expect lots of fun social media content and challenges that'll make you want to hit that like faster than you could ever get your code to run. I have a cult following for trends, and I'm ready to bring our community together, one fun video at a time!

  • A CSSS discord server that feels like home šŸ”: comfy, welcoming, and safe. Being an exec this semester, I have garnered insight and have noticed complaints that people have about the server. Therefore, I will make moderations and changes in order for everyone to feel more at home.

  • I will also invest time to get in contact (communicate šŸ¤“) with brands and see if we can get cool sponsorships for not just events, but also fun giveaways and all of that!!

I promise to keep my yapping to a minimum (for now ā˜ŗļø), but I would greatly appreciate your vote, and hopefully we'll get to see these ideas come to life in 2025 :)

Peace out,

Chloe āœŒļø

Nominee Speech:

Hello everyone! My name is Dina Zeng, and I am a 4th-year Software System Student.

Previously, I was your DOA (2021-2022, 2023-2024) & E@L (Spring 2022), WiCS Co-President (2021-2022), and Software Systems External Representative (2021-2022) & First-year representative (2020-2021).

While I was your DOA, I introduced the current meeting minutes templates and throughout my terms as an executive, I organized and facilitated multiple events such as Silicon Valley 2024, Snow Day on Burnaby Mountain (2020), and Trivia Night(s) (2021/2022). As Silicon Valley chair, I have successfully developed a relationship between Alumni Relations & the CSSS, saved an estimated 5-10k in funding, and secured a visit to NVIDIA, Google, Discord, and Futurewei for the trip. I have also advocated for milk/cereal in the common room (despite being lactose intolerant), coffee (+ the coffee machine), and other amenities. Additionally, I have a car (that goes brrrr) and have historically driven it around to pick up supplies + resources. If voted DOA, I will ensure our minutes are readable, standardized, and most importantly, very slay :fire: ++ I am very organized and am definitely, very trustworthy with your documents (please refer to the 20-30 pages of documentation I have written for Silicon Valley if you have access).

This will be my 3rd term as DOA if elected so I would like to spice up my promises:
- A CSSS community sticker sheet (idea stolen from SSSS ty friends :))
- CSSS MUN
- idk what you guys want from me I've been here forever and I do a lot of behind-the-scenes work ;-; and I'm literally concussed my brain is too swole to think rn

Please say hi to me when you see me in the common room, I love meeting new people (anything is better than crying over math) :)

Thank you for your time. Stay Slay Everyone <3
