Here we hope to inform our students of exciting opportunities and events, while cutting down on the sheer amount of emails sent for each individual event.

CSSS General Meeting 

Q: What is a General Meeting? 
A: General Meetings are how the Computing Science Student Society passes information along to the student body and motion money to be spent on items and events. By attending you will get to have a better understanding how we operate and have a say in how we run.

FallHacks 2021 

The CSSS second annual Fall Hacks hackathon is taking place on Saturday November 27th. This event is open to all SFU students. We have no expectation on programming experience, if this is your first semester or your last you are welcome to attend!
 
We will be checking Photo ID and BC Vaccine Card as well as collecting contact tracing information. Please have you ID and BC Vaccine Card ready before attending the event.
 
Date: Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021
Time: 9:30am - 8:30pm
Location: Sustainable Energy Engineering Building (or online)
Price: Free! (Lunch and dinner will be served for those attending in person)
Teams: You can work in teams up to 5 or individually. Please have your teams formed and their details prior to signing up so we know which room to assign your group to.
Why attend?: Hackathons are a great opportunity to make a cool project and learn some new skills. If you are looking for projects to add on your resume, participating is a great opportunity to add to it.

CSSS Movie Night

On Monday November 29th, starting at 6pm, we’ll be hosting a Movie Night (IRL)! We’ll be playing one movie which will be chosen by the attendees on the day of the event! Food will be provided!
 
We will be checking Photo ID and BC Vaccine Card as well as collecting contact tracing information. Please have you ID and BC Vaccine Card ready before attending the event.

Pop Machine Seasonal Mystery Column

Feeling thirsty? Feel like RNG is on your side!? Come to the CSSS common room to test your luck on the pop machine mystery column!

Basically: Random pop for 75 cents. Some pops come with a free pop ticket!

CSSS Fall Hacks 2021 (Hackathon)

Hi All,


I am pleased to announce our second annual Fall Hacks hackathon on Saturday November 27th. We put emphasis on learning and creativity, so don't worry about building something "useful"; focus on having some fun and learning something new.

This event is open to all SFU students. We have no expectation on programming experience, if this is your first semester or your last you are welcome to attend! We will be checking your BC vaccine cards and photo ID upon admission. Masks are required to be worn throughout the event.


Date and Time:

Saturday November 27th 9:30AM-8:30PM


Location:

Surrey Sustainable Energy Engineering building or online.


Attendance is free! There is a limited number of tickets. Please only sign up with your group if you plan on attending. Only SFU students can participant in this event.


Teams:

You can work in teams up to 5 or individually. Please have your teams formed and their details prior to signing up so we know which room to assign your group to.


Prizes:

Prizes are split between winning team members.


Food:

Lunch and dinner will be served for those attending in person. Please indicate dietary restrictions when entering details when signing up.

CSSS Board Games Night 

Can't get enough of playing Board Games with your friends? Fear not! On Friday, Nov. 19 at 5:00pm, join the CSSS in yet another Board Games Night to conclude your long week!

SFU Applied Sciences Outreach Hiring (with Science AL!VE) 

The Facutly of Applied Sciences (FAS)  is currently hiring for 6 instructor positions with the Pathways to STEAM program that partners with the Surrey School District (SD36) to engage at-risk youth in STEAM programming (science, technology, engineering, arts and design, mathematics) !

Work Duration: January 4th, 2021 to March 25th, 2021
Deadline: Dec. 1st
Pay:  $17/hr + 4% in lieu of benefits

Canada’s Cyber Security Challenge - CyberSCI

Cyber*Sci is a one-day event where employers can assess the skills of prospective students while they try to break into a realistic, live corporate network. 

The winners from each regional event will be invited to Ottawa for the national finals in July 2022; the top two teams will go on to represent Canada at the European Cyber Security Challenge in Fall 2022. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to face international competitors and develop their cybersecurity skills.
 
Date of Event: January 15, 2022
Interested? By November 22, 2021, Please send an email to Mohammad Tayebi at tayebi@sfu.ca  attached with a cover letter describing your background in cybersecurity, systems and network security and penetration testing.

CS Peer Tutor Hiring (Spring 2022)

The School of Computing Science is currently seeking students in the Computing Science majors for peer tutoring positions for CMPT 120, CMPT 125, CMPT 130, CMPT 135, CMPT 225, and MACM 101 tutors for Spring 2022. You will gain experience in instruction and skills in mentoring, communication and leadership over a commitment of 3-4 hours per week.
