The next general meeting for the CSSS will be held on Monday, February 7th, 2022.

CS Teaching Awards Reminder

Hello CSSS members, 

This is a reminder of the second annual School of Computing Science Excellence in Teaching Awards, which is accepting nominations untilFebruary 28th, 2022. These awards recognize teachers in the School of Computing Science who deliver high-quality materials, design innovative and engaging teaching methods, and create respectful and inclusive learning environments. The award is given annually to one or two faculty members, and last year's winners were Angelica Lim and Greg Baker.

Any student associated with the School of Computing Science can submit one or more nominations; joint nominations involving groups of nominators are welcome. Nominations for both early-career and later-career faculty are encouraged. 
 
Please email your nominations to cs_teaching_awards@sfu.ca; the nomination should reference the selection criteria below:

  • Quality of teaching, including the ability to clearly present complex information, the creation of an engaging, supportive learning environment, and student success. 
  • Innovation of teaching, including updating course material, adoption of innovative teaching methods, and development of tools. 
  • Impact on the community, including leading teaching initiatives, delivering talks on teaching innovation, and contribution to outreach activities. 
 
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the nomination process as this event inspires faculty to continue to improve and innovate upon their teaching.

A: General Meetings are how the Computing Science Student Society passes information along to the student body and motion money to be spent on items and events. By attending you will get to have a better understanding how we operate and have a say in how we run.

StormHacks 2022

⚑ SFU's Largest Hackathon is back! βš‘
 

Applications for StormHacks 2022 is open! 
From February 18-20, 2022, StormHacks welcomes you to collaborate, create, and connect with a community of 500+ students across the globe. Over the course of 36 hours, you will have the opportunity to design and develop a project that tackles real-world problems with innovation and insight. If this is your first time attending a hackathon, don't worryβ€”we'll have plenty of workshops and mentors to support you along the way.

SystemHacks 2022 (QuackathonπŸ¦†)

SystemsHacks is a 12-hour, beginner-friendly Hackathon brought to you by our friends over at the Software Systems Student Society (SSSS). Many students from all over SFU have attended SystemsHacks in the past for the sense of community, technical experience, and prizes! SystemsHacks has occurred annually since 2017 and we are excited to bring you another virtual event. Everyone is welcome to apply here!

This year's theme is Quackathon πŸ¦†; create a project broadly duck-based that'll make the judges quack up! Create a duck πŸ¦† mascot, identify ducks πŸ¦† with AI, and more; you're only limited by your imagination! Think up new and innovative ways to insert a duck  πŸ¦† wherever into your project!
