Hello CSSS Members,
SAP is running an invitational hackathon for student groups from Vancouver universities and we (SFU) have been invited!
Event details:
The deadline for signup is September 13. Please reply to this email or send an email to csss-doe-current@sfu.ca with your team members’ names and leader’s contact email. I will forward the leader the official signup form which must be filled out immediately after.
Here’s some more information about the event:
The SAP Invitational Hackathon is a weekend hacking event for top recruiting universities in BC (UBC, SFU, BCIT, and NE). You will get to solve a real-world challenge with a creative mind plus an opportunity to showcase your unique expertise to a panel of hiring managers. You will also be guided by a panel of experts who develop some of the most innovative SAP enterprise solutions during the Hackathon, to gain certain tips and exposure to industry practices and network with them.
The space is limited, each university will be only allocated 10 teams* to compete with the most talented uprising stars in Vancouver, BC.
Prizes include: Lunch with SAP’s executive team members and hiring managers, and much more. Additionally, certificates will be provided to those who participate.
Additional caveat for student clubs: Those who wish to sign up may also associate themselves with student clubs. To those who do, the highest ranking winner will also be competing for a $7,000 prize pool of SAP sponsorship towards their events.
* Note that other student groups such as SFU Surge and WiCS may also send teams, so if your team signs up under the CSSS we cannot guarantee a spot in the event.
Happy hacking!

Hello everyone,
ProjectX is a four-month long machine learning research competition for undergrads hosted by University of Toronto Artificial Intelligence Group ( https://www.uoft.ai/ ). Over those four months, participants will be working on their topic and writing a paper about their findings.
As long as you are an Undergraduate student graduating after April 2023 you are eligible to participate.
Website for Project-X 2021 (last year):
https://www.uoft.ai/projectx-2021
Theme:
Interaction
"Possible focus areas may take a look into how we communicate with each other, the way our infrastructure poses physical barriers to access for people, and the way that we interact with the computer systems that have become central to our daily lives. "
Prize:
Cash prize of $25 000 and invite to UofT AI Conference in January 2023.
Timeline of Project:
September 2022 - December 2022
Team Size:
1 team from SFU of 3-6 undergraduates
Samples of previous outcomes:
Find attached to this email.
If you are interested, or if you have any questions, please write an email to
csss-exec-current@sfu.ca
detailing why you are interested, past project experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence, planned work/course load for Fall 2022 and your resume. Also include when you are expected to graduate and if you will be able to dedicate time to the long commitment. This is a big project so if you plan to take a heavy course load in Fall this may not the best competition to participate in. If you are interested please submit your application byAugust 18th 23:59 PST.
If you have people you would ideally like to work with please include their names in your email. We may match people up to form the team. Also attached is an invitation package as well as sample outcomes from previous years.
Best,
Justin Yan
