Undergrad Research CS Opportunities!

posted by Mitchell Gale on Jan. 16, 2023, 3:03 a.m.

Hi All,

Have you ever been interested in computing science research at SFU? One of the potential ways to give research a shot is through NSERC funding where you can get paid for working as a researcher.

Please take a look at the below message for more details about the application process and the potential openings.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Student,

Although we are still expecting the announcement of the NSERC/VPR USRA offerings to our department (next week or so), we would like to give you a preview of the faculty projects and Award information - https://www.sfu.ca/computing/current-students/undergraduate-students/research/USRA.html

Depending on each faculty project supervisor's preference, you may be asked to contact them individually first by a date they state, before formally submitting your applications to Coursys and NSERC portal as described in https://www.sfu.ca/computing/current-students/undergraduate-students/research/USRA.html This Coursys and NSERC portal are not yet open pending the announcement. When we receive news of that, we will email you again. We expect our students to submit these around Feb. 12th.

For questions, please contact cs_undergrad_program_coordinator@sfu.ca

Best wishes,

Xingdong Yang

We Want YOU To Be A CSSS Mentor!!! (Spring 2023 CSSS Mentorship)

posted by Oliver Xie on Jan. 6, 2023, 10:30 a.m.

We need your help.

We need you, the strategist planning your courses in advance to get the best instructors and the ideal timeslots. We need you, someone who knows the golden ratio of balance between academic success, healthy habits, and a social life. We need you, the torchbearers for the future generation of Computing Science practitioners.

We need YOU to be a CSSS Mentor!

Mentorship only results in good things for you:

  1. Practice the skills needed to become a great leader.
  2. Develop new friendships and foster a stronger Computing Science community.
  3. Cultivate curiosity, observe the world through fresh eyes, and reflect on your own journey.

We need your help to build a bright future for Computing Science at SFU.

APPLY HERE: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/S62ZD99

(deadline: January 9)

More details:

  • Mentors and mentees will be formally paired from late January to March. You will have 4-5 hours of sessions with your partner.
  • Mentorship is offered both virtually and in-person.
  • Topics are driven by the mentee and mentors will share candid feedback. We provide support for academic, career, and other matters to help you thrive at SFU!

For prospective mentors:

  • New mentors (those who have not done CSSS Mentorship before) will have a ~30 min interview (virtual or in-person).
  • In early January, mentor profiles will be posted. Accepted mentees will be able to select their preferred mentors but final pairings will be done by the mentorship program organizers.
  • Final pairings will be announced at an in-person ceremony (room and date TBA) in mid January. There, you will meet your mentor/mentee, exchange contact information, pick your format, and determine your meeting frequency.

For mentees:

  • Apply here: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/S6C68TT
  • We will release the list of mentors over the weekend and will notify you when that happens. You must fill out the form to see the mentors. Afterwards, you will rank which mentors you prefer to work with.
  • Due to the limited amount of mentors, we cannot guarantee that all mentees who apply will be paired with a mentor for Spring 2023.

Let’s build a stronger Computing Science community together!

Re: CS Mentorship Program - Deadline today

posted by CS Student Society President on Jan. 6, 2023, 12:51 a.m.

Hi All,

The Faculty of Applied Science is starting amentorship program to match you, with a mentor working in the industry! You can ask questions about their journey through their professional career and ask lots of questions to figure out how to best shape your career. You may be able to learn things that you would not be able to pick up as a student from a mentor.

The deadline for this program was extended to 5PM January 6th, 2023! I hope you can take advantage of this opportunity!

** Having previous co-op terms is nice, but not required!

All the mentors will have years of experience working in the tech industry, something that most of us will be going into after we graduate. Many of the potential mentors will be alumnus from SFU, so they might have taken a very similar path as you and you can learn from them, what's not great about that?

Best,

Subject: CS Mentorship Program - Deadline today

Hi All,

I am passing along the message below on behalf of Heesu and Stephanie from FAS.

This is a new and really unique opportunity to learn from mentors. Deadline is today so please apply soon!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear CS/SOSY Students,

It is with great pleasure we wish to announce the launch of our new FAS Mentorship Program! This program is intended to pair students in Faculty of Applied Sciences with mentors who currently work in the field, ultimately helping you navigate the transition from university to the workforce.

To learn more about the program, eligibility requirements, and submit your application please visit our webpage: http://www.sfu.ca/fas/current-student/GetInvolved/Mentorship.html

Application Deadline: Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Due to limited number of mentors available for the inaugural offering, participants will be selected on a competitive basis. While we cannot guarantee we will be able to find a 100% perfect match for every student, we will do our best to pair you with a mentor based on interest in a specific job functional area and/or industry.

Selected participants in Computing Science and Software Systems major programs will be contacted in January 2023 and will be provided with next steps.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to connect with us.

Best,

Stephanie & Heesu
