Announcements:

CS Mentorship Program - Deadline today

posted by CS Student Society President on Dec. 14, 2022, 2:21 p.m.

Hi All,

I am passing along the message below on behalf of Heesu and Stephanie from FAS.

This is a new and really unique opportunity to learn from mentors. Deadline is today so please apply soon!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear CS/SOSY Students,

It is with great pleasure we wish to announce the launch of our new FAS Mentorship Program! This program is intended to pair students in Faculty of Applied Sciences with mentors who currently work in the field, ultimately helping you navigate the transition from university to the workforce.

To learn more about the program, eligibility requirements, and submit your application please visit our webpage: http://www.sfu.ca/fas/current-student/GetInvolved/Mentorship.html

Application Deadline: Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Due to limited number of mentors available for the inaugural offering, participants will be selected on a competitive basis. While we cannot guarantee we will be able to find a 100% perfect match for every student, we will do our best to pair you with a mentor based on interest in a specific job functional area and/or industry.

Selected participants in Computing Science and Software Systems major programs will be contacted in January 2023 and will be provided with next steps.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to connect with us.

Best,

Stephanie & Heesu

SFU Resources - Mental health and more

posted by Mitchell Gale on Dec. 13, 2022, 11:19 a.m.

Hi All,

I am passing along the message below from Dr. Ouldooz Baghban Karimi, one of our great members of the computing science faculty here at SFU.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear students,

As we reach the exams season, I would like to take a moment to discuss availability of useful resources with you. In Computing Science, we are committed to creating a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning environment, in which all undergraduate and graduate students can thrive.

We know that being a student can be very challenging, especially as we are approaching the exams season. We would like to remind you that you can access a variety of personal support services on campus. We have listed a few examples below:

  • Free and confidential support, information, and guidance for all members of the SFU community, no matter where or when the sexual violence occurred. SVSPO case managers can assist with academic concessions at SFU, referrals to campus and community-based services, and / or reporting options.

  • Free personal counselling for all SFU undergraduate and graduate students. HCS also offers a range of student support groups.

  • 24/7 mental health support in multiple languages. This service is free for SFU undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Confidential and impartial guidance to SFU students who are experiencing discriminatory harassment (for example, sexual harassment or race-based harassment) or discrimination by any member of the SFU community. A complaint process is available, but students do not need to file a complaint to receive support and guidance.

  • Confidential information, support, and guidance for students who are being impacted by bullying or harassment by another SFU community member

I encourage you to reach out for support from one of these resources or to connect directly with an instructor or staff member in Computing Science for assistance. If you have any questions or concerns, you are also welcome to contact cs-diversity-chair@sfu.ca.

On behalf of all the faculty and staff in Computing Science, I would like to wish you smooth exams season and safe and happy holidays.

Best,
Ouldooz

Course Evaluations - DUE TODAy

posted by Mitchell Gale on Dec. 6, 2022, 11:53 p.m.

Hi All,

I'm sure you've all received emails about your filling out some "course evaluations" for the various courses you are taking.

You might fill them out and wonder what they are actually for, what benefits do they provide. They can be used by the course instructor to improve future course offerings and methods of teaching as well as by the department when evaluating quality of instruction.

Please be as specific as possible with your examples and explanations as that provide much better information compared to "this course was a 6/10".

Here's the link! (Due by 11:59PM December 6th (Today!)).

Re: Advent of Code Challenge // CSSS Event

posted by Gabriel Stang on Dec. 1, 2022, 2:06 a.m.

Hello again challengers!

For those of you who signed up, the first puzzle was just released at 9pm! Advent of Code uses EST, so the challenges will always be released at 9pm Vancouver time the day before.

# How does Advent of Code work?

  1. Once a challenge is released, you'll be able to go to it's page where a description of the puzzle is provided, with a little story mixed in. (ex for day1: https://adventofcode.com/2022/day/1
  2. Every day there are two puzzles released that use the same input data, with the second usually being a more challenging variant of the first. You unlock the second puzzle after completing the first one.
  3. First, you'll have to download your input data (ex: https://adventofcode.com/2022/day/1/input) and copy it into a file on your computer to read from.
  4. Next, you write a program with your programming language of choice to answer the question at the bottom of the page.
  5. Finally, you upload the answer to the input box. If you got it right, the website will congratulate you and you get 1 star! If not, you'll have to wait 1 minute before making another submission.

# I can't access any of those links you provided!
If this is the case, make sure you make an account with Advent of Code first! A unique puzzle input + solution pair will be created for each account.

The first several days are typically somewhat trivial, so don't worry if you're late due to exams or whatnot; there will still be many chances to take the lead!

Good luck to everyone!
