 🎇 Interested in computer architecture? Applications for the Fourth Annual Undergrad Architecture Mentoring Workshop are live!

The workshop is held under the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA 2022).

The workshop will most benefit students who will receive their degree in 2023 or 2024 and are considering graduate study.

🧰 The Workshop: 
  • Introduces students to the challenges and research opportunities in the field of computer architecture.
  • Offers networking opportunities with professors in the field of computer architecture. Last year, professors from ~40 universities were uArch mentors.
  • Provides sessions and panels with professors and current students on how to apply for and thrive in graduate school & navigate the architecture research landscape effectively.

 💻 The CS department is looking for CS Peer tutors for the Summer 2022 term!

The School of Computing Science is currently seeking FAS majors for peer tutoring positions for CMPT 120, CMPT 125, CMPT 225, and MACM 101 for Summer 2022. You will gain experience in instruction and skills in mentoring, communication and leadership over a commitment of 3-4 hours per week.

🎮CSSS Halo Infinite Tournament

The SFU Computing Science Student Society (CSSS) is holding a 🎮Halo Infinite tournament on the 26th of March, with the possibility of continuing onto the next day.

📜Rules:

-Each team must consist of at least one current SFU student with a valid SFU email.
-Please ensure that everyone on your team has a Discord account.
-Non-attendance by any team member may result in disqualification, and tournament organizers get the final ruling in whether to disqualify teams for any suspected acts of cheating.
-To confirm participation, please have all team members add MegaBMcBlock (no suffix tag, ie #1234) on Xbox Live, or Steam (friend code 217666787) using the same accounts provided during registration.

🕹️ More Information:

-No input/platform restrictions. (Cross-play between Xbox and PC, with Controller and M&K inputs. Split screen on console allowed.)
-Intended to be a slightly modified single elimination bracket, but this may be changed to a round robin or other style depending on the number of teams that sign up. Maps and game types will be preselected, and the match schedule will be released and emailed to participants Friday 24th March, 2022 after team sign ups are complete.
-This tournament will use the already built in existing game modes, or slight modifications:
(1) Ranked Slayer, Ranked CTF, Ranked Oddball, and Ranked Strongholds (one starting grenade).
(2) Unmodified Tactical Slayer
(3) Attrition (one starting grenade, no motion tracker)

Sat, 26th March, 2022 (12PM - 3PM, 4PM - 7PM, 8PM - 11PM)
 Sun, 27th March, 2022 (12PM - 3PM, 4PM - 7PM, 8PM - 11PM)
Prizes: $25 CAD in gift cards for each member of the winning team, as well as 3 $25 CAD gift cards for 3 random non-winning players!

2022-2023 CSSS General Elections Nominations

Greetings,

The nomination period for yearly positions in the CSSS begins today, and lasts until 11:59pm on March 31st. These positions are until 2023 April. If you want to run for any of the positions below, or want to nominate someone for one of these positions, please email the election officer at csss-elections@sfu.ca with your Full Name.

The positions that you can run for are:

President

The President shall:

  • Carry out the business and upkeep of the CSSS, including the delegation of duties to other members of the Society as necessary and in accordance with this Constitution, as directed by the decisions of the membership, in order to ensure the well-being of the Society.
  • Be responsible for calling General Meetings.
  • Assume ex officio membership on all committees within the CSSS and to which the CSSS appoints representatives.
  • Act as official spokesperson and representative for the CSSS.
  • Be the official contact with the School of Computing Science and its representatives.
  • Be the official contact with the Simon Fraser Student Society and its representatives.
  • Compile a semester contact list of the executive members for the School of Computing Science and the Student Union Organizer.
  • Be responsible for monitoring all projects funded through the Society.
  • Be a signing officer of the Society, including the Society's Bank Account.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Vice-President

The Vice-President shall:

  • Chair all meetings or shall share or delegate this task on direction from a General Meeting.
  • Perform public relations tasks on behalf of the CSSS in order to promote the CSSS and expand its membership.
  • Coordinate volunteers for the continued operation of the CSSS.
  • Provide a line of communication between the CSSS, graduate students, and alumni.
  • Assume the duties of the President in the event that the President is unable or unavailable to carry them out, or that the position of President becomes vacant.
  • Be a signing officer of the Society, including the Society's Bank Account.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Treasurer

The Treasurer shall:

  • Maintain all financial records of the CSSS.
  • Make regular financial reports to the membership.
  • Be a signing officer of the Society, including the Society's Bank Account.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Director of Resources

The Director of Resources shall:

  • Be responsible for ensuring the administration of maintenance, upkeep, and smooth operation of all CSSS resources and assets, including but not limited to common room(s), technical equipment, vending machine(s), and exam files, such that these resources remain in good working order and are usable by the membership.
  • Be regularly available for the payment and acquisition of goods and assets as is necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of the Society.
  • Be a signing officer of the Society, including the Society’s Bank Account.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Director of Events

The Director of Events shall:

  • Chair the Events Committee.
  • Plan, organize, and execute all CSSS sponsored events or delegate such responsibilities as necessary.
  • Be a signing officer of the Society, including the Society’s Bank Account.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Assistant Director of Events

The Assistant Director of Events shall:

  • Plan, organize, and execute frequent CSSS-sponsored events and other events as directed by the Director of Events, or delegate such responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Be a signing officer of the Society, including the Society’s Bank Account.
  • tem Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Director of Communications

The Director of Communications shall:

  • Perform public relations tasks on behalf of the CSSS in order to promote the CSSS and expand its membership.
  • Provide a line of communication between the CSSS, graduate students, and alumni.
  • Maintain records of all correspondence between the Society and other organisations.
  • Oversee the Society’s social media accounts and online presence.
  • Provide assistance in the promotion of Society events and events of other entities that are of benefit to the Society.
  • Sit on the Frosh Week, OpFair, and FAS Formal Committees.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

Director of Archives

The Director of Archives shall:

  • Ensure that proper notice of General Meetings is given, as specified by this Constitution.
  • Keep and reproduce both minutes of CSSS meetings and written records of all decisions, made at properly constituted meetings of the Society.
  • Make the minutes of all meetings available to the public, including the Student Union Organiser.
  • Compile semester executive, representative, and committee membership lists.
  • Post hard copies of the minutes of General Meetings near the CSSS common room(s), and distribute electronic versions of the minutes to appropriate CSSS mailing lists.
  • Maintain the records of the CSSS, including but not limited to the minutes archive, continuity reports, event summaries, Society procedures, and Society history.
  • Be able to provide guidance on the regulations and procedures of the CSSS and SFSS.
  • Write a continuity report at the end of their term for the next executive member who will fill this position.

🎓 Outstanding Teaching Assisstant Award

CS Students - Nominate your favorite TA! 🏫

This award recognizes exceptional TAs in the School of Computing Science for their outstanding work in teaching and performing other TA duties. Up to 10% of CS TAs, chosen by the Teaching Assistant Awards committee at the end of each term, will receive the award.

Any student taking a CS course can submit one or more nominations to the Teaching Assistant Awards committee 
The nomination should describe, in at least two sentences, the nominee’s contributions to one or more of the criteria:

1) Overall quality of teaching
2) Mastery of the subject area and ability to motivate students
3) Ability to develop course materials that promote learning (e.g. website, tutorials, assignment and exam questions)
4) Capacity to create engaging, inclusive learning environments and promote critical thinking.
5) Consistency, timeliness, and integrity in evaluating students

📊 Data Science Meetings

The Data Science Student Society (DSSS) wants to do an analysis of salaries to have a better understanding of median salary by industry (especially ours) and test the hypothesis of the gender wage gap in different fields. The current project will boost your confidence in Data Science skills, and be a great addition to your resume!
 
This would be the perfect opportunity if you want to learn or get hands-on practice for Data Analysis, Data Processing, in conjugation with communicating your finding to a team by working on a big dataset of over 60k entries. The implementation would be handled in Python while certain tasks could be done using other tools such as R, Tableau, Excel if that is what you want to work with.
