Hi, I’m Gary. I was Exec at Large in Fall 2014 and Director of Resources in the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2015. I have also volunteered for the Frosh events in 2015, 2017 and 2018, and am currently organizing the CSSS League of Legends tournament.

If you elect me as the Director of Events, I pledge to do the following:

  • Help bring about and organize the Halloween Pub Crawl
  • Hold more gaming events, online and in-person. (Hearthstone, Overwatch, more League of Legends, Fortnite, Civilization V, etc.)
  • Run Linux install workshops open to the public
  • Limit serving pizza to only every third Boardgames Night and hold polls on Discord for what food to be served on the other nights
  • Increase funds for future events with fundraising events such as bake sales, and Linux booting USB sales

I would also like to organize one major event before the end of my term. Once elected, I will investigate the feasibility of these two possible options:

  • A 3-day/2-night ski trip to Big White, Whistler or some other ski resort
  • A hackathon or programming competition, hopefully working together with local companies

I think the CSSS membership should vote for me as Director of Events because I’m skilled at creating efficient systems, and because I am an outgoing, optimistic person. I am well acquainted with most of the current CSSS executive team, as well as with many of the CSSS community leaders.

I have been with the CSSS for almost 4 years now and have seen it at its best and at its worst. I know community participation and popular interest are what give purpose to this society. To that, I pledge to make more CSSS events accessible to the membership and memorable for years to come.

Thanks for reading and hope your semester is legend…(wait for it),

Gary

Hello, everyone!

My name is Sheldon Bond and I am a second year transfer student from Prince George, BC, and have just started at SFU this fall. I am here to get a double major in CS and Chemistry with a minor in Philosophy. I would like to become the Director of Events for the CSSS because I see an opportunity to grow the CS community at SFU in a positive, supportive, inclusive direction.

I have 10 years worth of XP outside of academia beyond highschool and am familiar with what is required to be in a leadership position and from the various jobs that I have had over the years from leading construction crews to working at a bank. I also have direct experience being an executive as I was the Treasurer for the employees union at the college I transferred from; Canadian Union of Public Employees 4951.

As the Director of Events I will always be open to feedback first and foremost. I will also be receptive to any suggestions for events the membership would like to see. I will work with the other executives in a constructive manner and do my best to collaborate and deliver events that are beneficial for the CSSS membership.

In particular, I would like to restructure “Hacktime” as an officially sponsored event by the Faculty of Applied Sciences so that it would appear with a students transcripts on their co-curricular record for

  1. building on-campus community by
  2. intentionally and positively contributing to the experience of their peers via service to a SFU unit, faculty, program, organization, or cause.*

I would do this by building Hacktime into a mentorship-style event where students can come and get help with the concepts they are struggling with in their CMPT classes from the more senior students. Hacktime would be for helping people with a concept from the ground-up and not for getting help with particular assignment questions.

I would also like to put together seasonal social events for each month, such as:

  • Muder Mystery
  • October
  • Thanksgiving Dinner & Movie - November
  • Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park & Hot Chocolate Trip – December
  • New Years Party – January
  • Singles Awareness Day Ice Cream Party – February
  • Saint Patrick’s Party – March
  • Easter Egg Hunt – April

It almost goes without saying at this point, but I would continue to host the bi-weekly boardgame night in TASC1.

*wording appears on the SFU Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Inclusion Criteria Checklist

Dear CSSS members,

My name is Mircea Taras, and I've been on co-op for the past 8 months, so some of you may not have met me yet. I have been the Council Rep, the Director of Resources, and even the Exec at Large at one point for the CSSS. been interested in student life improvements for as long as I've been part of the society, and my time with the CSSS has been filled with great experiences and solid friendships. I want to continue the legacy of our past DoE's, but with more suggestions from the membership. To make this a reality, I have a few ideas (so far):

  • Movie nights (with membership voting on which movie to watch)
  • Game Nights (as is tradition), featuring:
    • Board games
    • Video games
    • Pizza / Chips / Pop / Other
    • D&D one-off campaigns (if there's interest)
  • One big event per semester (by online vote to decide)

Please feel free to make suggestions for what else you'd like to do. I'm graduating at the end of Spring, so getting to be involved in a major way will be my last opportunity to contribute to the CSSS.

Thanks for reading,
Mircea

Unlike my competitors, I have no intention of providing you with a fraudulent list of campaign promises. During this year's prior CSSS elections, most campaign promises went unfulfilled.

I have substantial experience in both planning, finance and budgeting. If I were a typical candidate, I would have run on some arbitrary platform of increasing the number of events and pizza, or planning a monthly coffee session with Bill Gates. Instead, I run on a platform of mediocracy and consistency. Events will be run as they planned, pizza will be delivered on time, and we will plan new events. I do not promise the world, but rather a high level of responsibility and determination to work toward a better Computing Science Student Society.

Your friendly neighbourhood Jesus is back for another year of meetings, merchandise, and good cheer! Entrust the entire social media presence of the CSSS to the hippest, coolest, most down-with-the-sickness person who cared to sign up. I will personally make fun of anyone who hits 'reply all' to a group email, and promise not to flood your inboxes (unless you deserve it).

Hello everyone!

My name is Laurens Bosman. I am finishing my second year of studies but this is my first year here at SFU. I am always looking for opportunities where I can make a difference and I believe I will when I get elected for this position.

As Director of Communications I will work towards accomplishing various goals that will affect the different groups that are impacted by the CSSS.

For the students that are close to graduating I will be looking for companies that want to attend networking events and are looking for recent grads to join their team.

For those that are just getting started on their degree I hope to secure speakers who are able to talk about the various paths you can take in computer science as it can be quite overwhelming to find the path that you want to take.

And for all students I hope to secure many interesting sponsorships for the various events that will be set up by the Director of Events.

As I am almost always online on various social medias you should be able to contact me virtually 24/7. This means that if you have an idea that you would like to share it will be easy to get in touch. Keep an eye out on your favorite social media as I will be sure to keep you updated with all the awesome events and parties that the CSSS hosts for you guys!

Thanks everyone and I hope that this will be another awesome year for the CSSS.
